Welcome to the Henry II and Thomas Becket Game
You are Henry II. You have to build up your reputation.
This is measured in reputation points.1、The year is 1154. Theobald, your Archbishop of Canterbury, recommends a young agreeable gentleman as Chancellor.Do you:
Agree to see him *
Ignore the recommendation
Jump to a later stage in events2、A good decision! Your reputation increases by 10 points. You meet with the man. He is called Thomas Becket, born in 1118 in Normandy. Currently he is an Archdeacon. You seem to get on well.Do you:
Ignore the recommendation
Satisfied, appoint Thomas as Chancellor *
Insult young Thomas, and inform him he has no business with you3、Excellent decision - your reputation increases by 20 points. Archbishop Theobald is pleased you have confidence in his recommendation. Becket retains his position of Archdeacon and becomes Chancellor as well.
You and your new Chancellor hit it off immediately. A strong bond begins to develop between you both.
You and Thomas become good friends4、Your reputation increases by 10 points. Similar personalities mean you share many views with your new Chancellor. He does a fantastic job, raising castles, repairing the Tower of London, conducting embassies and arranging your troops for war.How do you respond to the hard work of Thomas?
Call Thomas to your palace to talk with him *
Just let him get on with the job5、Excellent decision - your reputation increases by 20 points. You tell Thomas how pleased you are with his hard work. You explain how you trust him, and how great it is to have an adviser who is both efficient and intelligent.
Thomas responds well to your praise, and promises to continue to support and assist you wherever he can.
Move on to 1158 - four years later6、Things are going well. As your envoy, Chancellor Thomas goes to Paris. However, is Thomas getting carried away? You hear reports of a procession of men, beasts and carrages laden with objects of luxury. What do you do?
Get advice from Theobald
Just let Thomas continue without saying anything
Ask Thomas to come and see you *7、A sensible decision - you gain 10 reputation points. You explain to Thomas about the recent rumours and say that you are getting a little worried. Thomas apologies saying he was unaware of the trouble, but thinks there is not much to really worry about. How do you react?
Accept his apology, but ask him to be more careful *
That isn't enough - pressure Thomas into changing his ways8、A sensible decision - gain 10 reputation points. You have reprimanded Thomas, and your critics are pleased. Yet by not being over the top, you have retained your superb Chancellor - well done!
How long does this harmony last?9、Archbishop Theobald is dying. He is talking openly about Thomas, saying he is not fit to hold any church position. Despite Theobald requesting a meeting with him, Thomas has not been to visit. What should you do?
Continue to support Thomas
Go and visit Theobald personally *
Instruct Becket to visit Theobald10、Probably the best choice - gain 10 reputation points. You go and visit Theobald and talk to him sensibly. Theobald is dying, and wishes to speak to Thomas. It appears that Thomas is not particularly bothered. What should you do?
Instruct Becket to visit Theobald
Apologise and explain that Thomas is extremely busy on royal business *11、Probably the best decision, yet your reputation is still damaged - lose 20 reputation points. You manage not to upset Thomas, which is best for you. Unfortunately Theobald is not pleased, feeling his last wishes are being ignored.
Archbishop Theobald dies12、In April 1161, Theobald dies. You are advised that many of your people feel Becket couldn't be bothered to visit Theobald. Rumours begin about Becket's loyalty - why did he ignore a dying man who had done so much for him? You need to take action:
Publicly condemn Becket
Ignore the situation
Publicly support Becket *13、Gain 20 reputation points. Your public was worried about Becket, yet they trust you. You explain how Thomas was swamped with royal business, yet you personally visited Theobald.
You manage to cover Becket's failure up, but you tell yourself to be cautious of him in the future
Decisions about the church14、Gregorian reform is sweeping across European churches. This sees the church gaining many powers. You, as Henry II, are worried about the church becoming too powerful. The death of Theobald gives you an opportunity - select:
Ask the Pope to decide - ask him who should become Archbishop
Appoint Foliot, a close associate of Theobald, as Archbishop
Ask Thomas Becket to become Archbishop15、Seems like a good decision - gain 20 reputation points. You ask Thomas to become Archbishop of Canterbury. He is not sure - he tells you he is worried about what will happen. How do you respond?
Tell Thomas not to be so silly - and appoint him Archbishop
Ask Thomas to explain his worries *16、Gain 20 reputation points - Thomas is pleased that you appear to be willing to listen to him. He tells you that he has enjoyed working as Chancellor, and values your friendship. He goes on to say that if he was given the job of Archbishop, he would feel uneasy. His loyalty would be to God, and this might harm your friendship.
Tell Thomas not to worry and appoint him *
Tell Thomas you understand, and appoint your other candidate, Foliot
Refer the matter to the Pope - what does he think?17、Your reputation with Thomas suffers - lose 20 reputation points. However, you believe this is the best way forward. Sometimes you have to suffer setbacks in order to make long term progress. Now your friend and close supporter is Archbishop of Canterbury, you believe you will face no difficulties with the church.
Investigate your concerns about the church18、One of your main aims is to reduce the powers of the church courts. These were set up by William the Conqueror to judge offences by clergymen and others against the Church and its property.
If found guilty, you would be fined, reduced in rank or, worst of all, excommunicated (expelled from the Church altogether).
Investigate what the problem really is19、Excommunication was a terrible sentence - but only for those who took their Christian beliefs seriously. Many claimed the right to be tried in a church court just because they were church readers or doorkeepers! Even if these men committed murder they were not put to death because the church courts could not give such a punishment.
So what - let's get back to some action!
Consult your advisers on the matter
Consult Archbishop Becket for advice20、Seems a good idea - contact your old friend for some help. Gain 10 reputation points. You attempt to contact Becket, but are informed that he is unavailable. He now stays up late into the night reading scriptures, gets up before dawn to pray and eats nothing but bread and water.
Insist that Becket contacts you *
Leave Becket to himself, and begin reform of the church courts21、A good choice - gain 10 reputation points. After your insistance, Becket does contact you. He says that his duty to the Church must now come before his duty to you. How do you respond?
Ask Becket if he is joking *
Begin reform of the church courts22、Hearing what Becket has said, you think he must be joking. You ask Becket directly. As this upsets him, you lose 30 reputation points. He simply replies, "I am a man who does nothing by half-measures. My first obligation is now to God".
Begin reform of the church courts
Tell Thomas that your respect his decision, and that you will back down
Meet with Thomas to discuss the matter *23、A good choice - you appear to be making attempts to solve your problems. You gain 10 Reputation points. When you meet with Becket, neither of you can agree. Your have made your position clear - reform of the church courts is needed. However, Becket is also clear, he will refuse to agree to changes in the law.
Take decisive action - sort out this mess! *
Agree to go along with Thomas to ensure the argument stops
Give Becket even more time24、You are at Clarendon, in Wiltshire. It is January 1164. Amongst other things, you declare that:
Church officials can be punished in the King's courts
Royal officials cannot be excommunicated
Appeals to the Pope in Rome are banned
Decisive, strong action gains you 50 reputation points.
How does Becket react?25、Becket says that he will agree with your declaration. A short time later though, he goes back on his word. He says the Consitutions of Clarendon break Church law. He appeals to the Pope, and unless you take action your reputation will suffer!
Tell Becket your friendship means a lot to you, so you will back down
Ignore Becket's threats, and let the situation settle
Officially summon Becket to your court at Northampton *26、October 1164. Gain 20 reputation points. Offically issuing a royal summons is a risk, but a further show of strength. You strongly believe in the need for these reforms, and your public reputation continues to grow as long as you keep taking decisive action.
Tell Thomas that you have had enough of this argument, and are willing to back down
Demand Becket explain about his spending as Chancellor *
Give Becket time to calm down27、Gain 10 reputation points. You demand Becket explains what he did with the large sums of money that passed through his hands as Chancellor.
This change of tactic demonstrates some attempt at decisive action - this helps your reputation. The argument shows no sign of ending though...28、Becket saw he was going to get in trouble with you. He didn't want to be accused of being a traitor and be imprisoned. On November 2nd 1164, he flees to France.
Investigate where Thomas has actually gone *
Try and make a deal with Thomas
Push through reforms without Thomas29、You order for Becket to be tracked down. You soon hear news. He has taken refuge with Louis VII of France. Currently, he is living with many of his own househould at Pontigny Abbey (shown above). Gain 20 reputation points.
Try and negotiate with Thomas
Threaten the monks of Pontigny *
Give in to Becket - you have had enough!30、You send an ultimatum to the monks. Throw Becket out of the Abbey or you will do everything in your power to destroy them. It sends a powerful message that improves your reputation as a King who takes decisive action. Gain 20 reputation points.
Discover Archbishop Becket's reaction31、Thomas hurls declarations of excommunication upon you. Becket can seriously damage you with such declarations. Your reputation is suffering - lose 40 reputation points. Be careful! Becket moves to an abbey near Sens, and continues to write terrible things about you.
Take action - seize Becket's property and exile his close family *
Ignore Becket, and let the situation settle
Give in, you have wasted enough time arguing!32、You gain 20 reputation points. Your strong decisive action sends a threatening message out to Becket. Unfortunately, such actions just make your feud worse.
As revenge, in June 1166 at Vezelay, Becket excommunicates many of your important and loyal followers...
Who did Becket excommunicate?33、Becket excommunicates those who he claims supported your Consitutions of Clarendon - John of Oxford, Richard of Ilchester, Joceline de Balliel and Robert de Lacy (your regent). He also excommunicates Ranulf de Broc, Hugh of St. Clair and Thomas FitzBernard for stealing money and possessions from Canterbury.
This is Becket's revenge. Your reputation suffers - lose 30 points!
Consider your options34、It is 1168. The situation between you and Becket has never been worse. You are meeting with the Papal legates. You also have heard that many of Becket's supporters are tired of living abroard - perhaps Becket would be open to negotiation?
Tell the Papal legates you are willing to meet with Thomas *
Send a personal message to Thomas offering to negotiate
You have had enough - argument is getting you nowhere - give in35、A sensible decision - gain 20 reputation points. You open the door to negotiation, but as you didn't appeal to Thomas himself, you still appear strong and capable.
You agree to meet in January 1169
Meeting at Montmirail36、You meet with Louis VII, King of France, in January 1169. Becket accompanies King Louis. However, as soon as you and Becket meet, tempers begin to flare again. Another argument develops, and you part as enemies. It is clear Thomas distrusts you, but you feel the same way about him.
Consult with your advisers *
End the feud - give in to Becket
Allow time for Becket to calm down37、You gain 10 reputation points. The situation is clearly difficult. Your advisers tell you that the Pope might put all of your people under interdict. This would clearly be terrible for you, as Louis could take advantage, and you would lose a great deal of support and power.
You also need to think about succession - who will become King after you?
What does interdict mean?
Consider the succession *
Issue additions to the Constitutions of Clarendon38、People like to see you consider the future. Your chosen successor is your eldest son, young Henry. There is a major problem though. You want your son crowned (known an anticipatory coronation) but this is the Archbishop of Canterbury's job. Becket isn't even in the country, let alone willing to do this!
Ask Becket to return, and offer your forgiveness
Ask the Archbishop of York to crown your son *
Leave the coronation of your son until Becket is willing to assist39、In the end, you are not left with many options. Gain 10 reputation points. So you don't appear weak and desperate for Becket to return, you instruct the Archbishop of York to crown young Henry on 14th July 1170. The Archbishop of York is a bitter enemy of Becket, and this action, denying the Archbishop of Canterbury of his ancient right to crown the King of England, will surely upset Becket even more.
39、On 27th July, 1170, you meet with King Louis VII again. Just as before, Becket is also in attendance. However, this time there is no flare up of tempers. You are very cautious, and do your best not to annoy Becket. Louis, sensing you may be able to sort out your difficulties, arranges for you to meet Becket alone. Be very careful what you say:
"I'm glad you agreed to meet - I'm willing to accept your apology"
"Your attitude and behaviour have been terrible!"
"It is good to meet, we have much to discuss" *40、Gain 10 reputation points. You talk uneasily to Becket, and he explains how he is keen to return to England. You talk about the crowning of young Henry. You appear to be settling your differences. Continue the negotiations:
"But you haven't mentioned the Constitutions of Clarendon!"
"I am pleased that we have been able to reach some agreement, let us talk more when in England." *
"If you return to England, I will publicly apologise for my behaviour"41、There is still much tension between Becket and yourself. However, you have not agreed more since Becket became Archbishop. Your decision not to push negotiations or bring up further difficult issues is sensible. Gain 10 reputation points.
Yet your short term gain may be at a cost - should you have discussed matters more fully?
Becket returns to England42、The uneasy peace between Becket and youself is welcomed. You are currently residing in Normandy. You send notice of your agreement back to England before Thomas arrives in Canterbury. It is 1st December 1170.
Becket's actions on his return43、You hear reports that Becket is acting rather strangely. In his sermon on Christmas day he announces that "I am come to die among you". You need to take action, as this kind of behaviour harms your reputation. Lose 10 reputation points. Make your next decision carefully!
Ignore Becket - leave him alone
Send for Becket - demand he meets with you
Ask for opinions from your loyal churchmen *44、Gain 10 reputation points. You send for the churchmen that you know and trust. You ask them to report on Becket. As you are in Normandy, it will be some time before they arrive, so you wait anxiously.
However, many of the churchmen you sent for arrive that evening. Not enough time has passed for your message to reach them...
Why have your loyal churchmen arrived so soon?45、"Sire, we have been excommunicated". You soon understand what has happened. Archbishop Becket has begun excommunicating all those who had opposed him during his exile. You are furious. Becket has made you look a fool and your reputation suffers. Lose 30 reputation points. At dinner, later that night
46、You are in such a rage. You have been tricked. Becket is refusing to absolve the bishops. As you drink wine at dinner, you hide your feelings less and less. By the end of the evening, you have wound yourself up about Becket. Amongst other things, you shout: "WHO WILL RID ME OF THIS MEDDLESOME PRIEST?"
These are your final words as you stumble to bed. Meanwhile47、On hearing your outburst, four knights decide it is their duty to carry out your wishes. They leave secretly for England that same night. Without you knowing, they arrive in Canterbury on 29th December late in the evening. They believe they are about to carry out the wishes of their king!
They enter the Cathedral48、They immediately search for Archbishop Becket. He flees into the cathedral. The four knights find him at the altar. They demand he absolve the bishops. Becket refuses, and they hack him to death, eventually splitting his skull. You hear the news
49、Lose 450 reputation points. Even though you didn't mean it, the Knights were acting on your words. They carried out your wishes! How do you react?
Send your condolences with flowers
Abdicate, and pray for forgiveness
Publicly promise to pay penance *50、There is little you can do to recover your reputation, but this goes some way. Gain 30 reputation points. Whilst many understand you did not literally order the murder of Thomas, you are held responsible.
Choose your act of penance:
Wear a sack-cloth and walk barefoot *
Allow yourself to be flogged with branches
Spend a night alone in Becket's tomb51、You actually do all three. In 1174, to show your sorrow, you wear a sack-cloth and walk barefoot through the streets of Canterbury while eighty monks flog you with branches. In addition to this, you spend the night in Becket's tomb.
As a result of your penance you are absolved (forgiven), and your reputation rises. Gain 50 reputation points.52、As you have found out, Henry II faced some incredibly difficult decisions during his reign. The murder of Thomas Becket destroyed his reputation.
Becket's courage cannot be doubted, and he gave his life for what he belived to be a vital issue.游戏到此结束,接下来会出现画面告诉你历史上的结局为何,下面还有其他的相关资料,为了巩固JQ我们不妨再做几道题:
